He bailed from "White 18" (Wk# 440578) with injuries. Bailed a 2nd time, 14 January, 1945, without wounds, from his K-4 S of Cologne. Two known victories, a Yak-1 and a P-40 in Russia on 18 June, 1943. His 3rd, a P-47 of 365FG at Lisieux on 10 June, 1944. His 4th, a Typhoon of RAF No. 439 Sq. N of Arnhem on 24 September, 1944. A 5th, a P-47 N of Lisieux on 10 June, 1944. A 6th, a Typhoon at Apeldoorn on 24 September, 1944.
BF 109 G6, Yellow 4,Lt. Melchior Kestel, 9./JG 26, Lille-North June 1943,KIA 25 June, 1943 when he failed to return from a bomber intercept over the North Sea in bad weather. Crashed at sea. One known victory, his 1st, a B-17 at Map Quadrant 15W S/4085 on 23 January, 1943, 2 days before his death. Another known victory, a P-47 of 334FS, 4FG, piloted by 2/Lt Robert A Boock, 10 km northwest of Ostende on 18 May, 1943. A 3rd, a B-17 at Schönberg on 13 June, 1943.
